In 1066 a large viking fleet landed in Riccall and marched to Fulford near York where a great battle was fought. The Vikings were led by Harold Hadrada who was King of Norway. Although victorious at Fulford he was later defeated and killed at Stamford Bridge by Harold Godwineson. Harold Godwineson was himself defeated weeks later by William the Conqueror at Hastings.

Here is an panoramic of the place where the Vikings landed their ships at Riccall.
